An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
