Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
