Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
