The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
