Puzzling Rosy Slime on Secluded Tasmanian Beach Raises Fears of Likely Algae Outbreak
Authorities in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Broad Appearance Along Shore
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a stretch of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.
Specimens Collected for Examination
Examples have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for testing. A official remarked that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in reaction to shifts in minerals, warmth, rain or sunlight".
"The events are sometimes called red or pink tides because the proliferations can change the water red," the official noted. "Only some algal blooms are harmful, with several kinds functioning as a primary source of nourishment for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The usual source of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
Increasing Frequency Connected to Global Warming
Algal blooms occur naturally but their occurrence has increased in recent years, partially due to climate change and contamination that join together to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disturbs the proper operation of aquatic systems.
These occurrences have been likened to subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as marine life is destroyed or suffocated, supplying more food for the bloom.
Previous Catastrophic Event in another region
Another region in the past dealt with a severe algal bloom along its southern shore after a succession of marine heatwaves, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The event caused swimmers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.
Scientist Assessment on the Local Case
An estuarine ecologist, who helped investigate the beginning of that event said, based on images of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are many of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.
The expert said this organism did not create poisons comparable to the organism involved in the previous severe algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of the organism after a proliferation of a different species, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Appeals for Investigation and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in the state, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and proposed the fish farming business was the primary suspect, pointing to like situations overseas.
"So Tasmania needs to issue a firm alert here, the authorities and the environmental agency need to react to this. We need to examine the samples we've taken and we need to put word out the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist expressed she had worries for people's well-being after experiencing a prickling feeling along her limbs and skin while being exposed with tainted seawater.
Reports of Deceased Marine Life and Demands for Leadership Response
An environmental foundation has documented lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist labeling the situation as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the government head to visit and "lead the reaction that government must be making".
"Officials needs to understand this is a crisis in the happening, commercially as well as for nature."
Official Reaction
Addressing journalists, the official said he was not aware of any connections between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, stating scientific testing was required before judgments could be made.
"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are safe for nature and viable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across Tasmania are our assets and we need to make sure the people and our industry can coexist to utilize our aquatic resources effectively and in a lasting way."
