An extensive 60-day cruise through the Land Down Under was terminated following the death of an elderly female passenger who was stranded by the cruise liner on a isolated tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the party for a break. The liner left without her and went back later that day after the personnel discovered the woman was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission located her remains the following day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the event, in coordination with law enforcement and the state coroner.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and personnel on the ship were informed that the rest of the journey had been called off due to the "sad loss and prior technical problems".

In a statement, he further stated that passengers would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also released an revised statement, and said they had "issued a order to the Captain" preventing any further travelers from boarding the ship.

The representative said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its return.

The vessel initially left the coastal city on October 24th, and was just two days into the expedition at the point of the elderly woman's death. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the journey.

Travelers on the ship - who generally pay substantial amounts of dollars to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the possibility of hiking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Response

The offspring of the victim said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the ship left Lizard Island after an planned excursion without my mother".

Through her comments, she described her mum as an "active elderly person" who was a member of a hiking group.

"Based on limited details we have been informed, it looks that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she stated.

She further stated that she wished the investigation would be able to determine what "the operator should have undertaken that might have preserved Mother's existence".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a extremely warm period, and mother became unwell on the hill climb," she explained.

"They requested her to head down, alone. Then the boat left, apparently without doing a headcount.

The ship accommodates up to 120 passengers with nearly fifty staff, according to corporate information. It was specially constructed to reach distant areas of Australia's coast and is fitted with "tenders" - compact vessels used to transport individuals on shore trips.

Events like this are rare, and liners have procedures to record which travelers are getting on or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.
